Question:
I'm not sure if you guys can help on this one. I thought I was logging
onto an alcohol site. I'll ask anyway. I need to detox from my alcohol
use, but I'm looking for a site that can tell me how to detox at home.
Anyone know of one? I have SAD and hate being around pretty much anyone
I don't know. My shrink has me on 6 mgs of Xanax a day just so I can
tolerate society.
Answer:
There is some AD's used to aid during an alcoholic withdrawal.
Venfaxaline has been tested with pretty sucess, but it is on th eother
hand addictive itself.
Your doc gives you low doses of xanax just for your own sake. Is is
addictive and the more potentially abbused among alcoholics or other
drug abusers.
Hang on and try to keep clean. You surely need to put some order in
your mind as well, so it might be a good idea to write down or mentally
analize how did you started with alcohol and why. But don't get
obssesed by that idea. The Aristothelic golden rule applies here as
elsewhere: the equillibrium is always in the middle.
Accept your GAD, it will wipe away. That's a scientific fact. What
comes next is for ou to confront with courage and patience.
Seriously see your doctor.
I have been drinking every day for 3 or 4 years until drunk, almost
every day.
I am right now on day 6 or 7, I can't remember, of no alcohol, and
the WORST I had was anxiety on day one before I was prescribed librium.
They later that night changed it to ativan when I couldn't fall asleep.
I have heard alcohol detox can be really really rough at home without
medication. The thread just below this about ativan withdrawal worries
(which they are tapering me off of) I talk about this in as well.
I always used to before this think all these pills were just a money
making racket, but now I know, some do have uses that are like a
miracle as I could never have stayed sober having to live with that
anxiety and insomnia for days.
Hooo doggies, lestat....this is not good. First off, 6 mg. of Xanax a
day is not a low dose at all....and it won't help in your alcohol
withdrawal because you're already on it with the booze.
You need to talk w/your doctor, and I hope you have the courage to
admit that you've been drinking. I assume that your drinking is to
excess and interferes with your life in some way, or else you wouldn't
be trying to quit.
I'd say you'd have the best chance in a medical detox. There are
complications that can arise that wouldn't be pleasant at
home...anything from severe tremors and anxiety to convulsions. They
can use the appropriate medication to make your detox more tolerable.
You might try to find a detox that is for the dually diagnosed. (people
with an addictive disorder and a psych disorder)
More than 20 years ago, I went through a detox, and I could not have
quit alcohol without it. I was phobic of people, phobic of pretty much
everything, but it was a matter of living or dying for me. I was a
maintanence alcoholic, drinking round the clock, and taking
tranquilizers.
It was hell having to be around people and all, but I was so surprised
at how physically easy they made the detox for me. I was euphoric the
day that I realized that for the first whole day in a few years, I
hadn't had one drink. (even if it was in a detox...I just never thought
I'd be able to quit drinking even for a day)
In my opinion, you will need to find a doctor, after your detox, that
is knowledgeable in the field of dual diagnosis. This kind of doctor
can prescribe something for your social anxiety that isn't as addictive
as some of them can be.
