Question:
Quick question: Where can I get omega-3 and omega-6 oils from? I'm not
particularly concerned, otherwise I'd go to my doctor, it's just that my
new girlfriend is currently doing a detox diet that essentially says "Go
vegan, but supplement", and she maintains that I'm not getting any (oils,
that is). I reckon I'm getting them from somewhere but I really couldn't
say where. At a guess, I'd say nuts and pulses. Am I close?
Incidentally, I could probably do with boning up on my nutrition. Anyone
want to suggest a (cheap!) book?
Answer:
For omega-3s, you need specific oils. I recommend flax seed oil, but
freshly ground flax seed meal (get the seeds and grind them in a
blender) is quite tasty on salads and such and contains plenty
beneficial oil. Omega-3s and -6s are also found in hempseeds and
hempseed oil, but not the stuff containing cannabanoids (don't grind
your stash).
In the UK you can go to your nearest Holland & Barratt store. They
sell their own brand organic "Optimum Oil Blend". It's quite expensive
at about 12UKP a bottle but every so often they have a half price offer
and I stock up then.
It has a 2:1:1 ration of omega 3, 6 and 9 and the ingredients are: flax
seed oil, sunflower oil, sesame seed oil, evening primrose oil, soya
lecithin and rice bran oil.
It is labelled as being suitable for vegans and is Soil Association
certified.
