Question:
i was thrust into a situation last night - in NYC w/ my other half and
we were at a trendy bar. i was fine for the first 15 minutes and then
really, really wanted a drink or a cigeratte. i decided the cigarette
was worse then the drink - so i had ONE gin and tonic. but my
question to you all is this - would wine have been better?
on another note, i am not really that hungry on day three - but, i
feel that when i see other people eating really great food i want
it!! i need to leave the room so i don't slip off this detox. those
of you who have been on the detox longer then me, does this change? i
am hoping the answer is yes.
Answer:
Yes it does. I've even gotten to the point where I really enjoy
smelling the food. I was at a BBQ last night and really enjoyed
smelling the hamburgers and hot dogs cooking. I even made brownies
and Pasta salad for the event. I was ok with all that and was happy
to sip my supplement. NOW don't get me wrong, I would loved to have
had a Hamburger, but was content because I know this is temporary and
I want to do something good for myself.
There is really no room for cheating because it undoes the whole
purpose of what you are trying to accomplish. Alcohol is toxic. It
is also a depressant. In order to get the detox accomplished you have
to stay away from all of it.
It does get MUCH easier. To the point, as Janice pointed out, that
you enjoy the smells of the foods around you without feeling like your
going to jump the person eating them to get some. When you make up
your mind that your going to 100% commit than you won't wonder about
cheating cause you'll start telling yourself the truth. The truth is
that if I eat, drink, or smoke that, it will eventually kill me.
I am on Day 16 and I have been in numerous such situations and have
not cheated. My first day we went and picked up pizza at my favorite
pizza place--smelled so good in my car on the way home. I went to a
concert at House of Blues on Day 6 and the smell of alcohol and smoke
(only on people's clothes) made me want to vomit. I went to a big
dinner at a Chinese Restaurant on Day 8 and the smell of salt and
spices drove me nuts and I nearly threw up trying to eat my "free
soup" out of a thermos because it was so bland. I went to Las Vegas
this past weekend and "dined" in restaurants--with my fiance. While
he had bacon, sausage, eggs and pancakes, I had herbal tea from a
thermos. I have also cooked countless delicious meals for my fiance
and four year old at home.
You just have to commit yourself to doing this. I take the view that
this is just 21 days out of my life. That's it 21 days. I
contemplated doing the detox for a few months before starting. I kept
putting it off until after this or that dinner or event. But finally,
I realized I could either put it off indefinitely or just do it with
the knowledge that I have to learn to function in my normal
surroundings if I am going to improve my health. The trendy lounges
are not going anywhere. My favorite pizza is not going anywhere. The
family dinners are not going anywhere. There is always an excuse to
eat cake or drink alcohol, and those excuses are not going anywhere.
The only thing that is going to change is me and my commitment to my
own health.
You are really lucky that you had your drink on Day 2. Any longer and
I think you would have been horribly ill. Personally, I think you
should either commit to this 100% or not do a detox at all. Just
maybe try to eat healthier and incorporate some of her advice without
doing a real detox, because if you cheat further into this you can
really do yourself more harm than if you never did it at all.
I would also advise that if you really want to do this you start over
from Day 3 and maybe just add protein shake the last couple of days so
you are not going more than 21 days without protein. I don't consider
you to have detoxed those first two days if you had a gin and tonic.
