Question:
I've been interested in liver detox. Has anyone had any experimence with
any
over-the-coutnter products? Do they work?
I am 29, social drinker, not alcoholic, but I do drink on a daily basis
(typically a glass or two of wine or beer over dinner), but I do go out
once
or twice a week and drink altogether 3-5 drinks. I haven't experienced any
physical or mental problems or symptoms (except hangovers), but i want to
start taking care of myself better.
Answer:
Perhaps there is such a thing as genuine over-the-counter liver detox,
but ideally, if you are serious, you should go for the more in depth
cleanse that takes time and effort, the best of which is fasting and a
change of diet. Besides to isolate the liver makes no sense as
practically all organs function collectively and influence each other.
You may want to consider giving up the 3-5 drinks once or twice a week.
Alcohol doesn't just cause toxin buildup in your liver, it kills it; so
cleansing your liver isn't going to help much with that. Flushing your
liver out might help in some ways, I'm not discouraging that, but it won't
slow the alcohol-related damage much at all.
It's hard to socialize with your friends if, to them, socialization always
equals drinking 3-5 drinks or more. If that is the case, you may want to
find some new friends.
